The lands

Twelve kinds of country, each with its own weather, scenes and writing, through every season. Every land has villages and cities too, drawn and described to suit it.

Forest in each season
ForestOld trees, glades and woodland roads, with rain that comes in waves, leaves that turn in autumn and snow that hushes the woods in winter.
Farmland in each season
FarmlandGentle, green country of fields, hedgerows and mills. Mild and often damp, rarely harsh, with spring storms and summer hail to keep a harvest anxious.
Grassland in each season
GrasslandOpen plains under a huge sky: hot summers, hard winters, and storms you can watch coming for an hour. Tornadoes, wildfires and blizzards are all at home here.
Mountains in each season
MountainsPeaks, passes and high valleys where the weather turns quickly: afternoon thunder in summer, deep snow in winter, and avalanches and rockfalls in between.
Desert in each season
DesertSand, stone and glare: blazing days, nights that turn cold fast, dust storms on the horizon, and the rare rain that comes all at once as a flash flood.
Rocky coast in each season
Rocky coastCliffs and headlands over a gray sea: cool, windy and often wrapped in fog, with gales that drive the spray over the rocks and the odd rogue wave.
Sandy coast in each season
Sandy coastLong beaches, dunes and harbors: warm sea breezes, sudden squalls, waterspouts offshore, and storms that push the sea up the sand.
Jungle in each season
JungleHot, heavy air under a green roof, a downpour most afternoons, and seasons that barely change. Supplies spoil, insects bite and rivers rise without warning.
Swamp in each season
SwampFens, bogs and slow rivers under drifting mist: warm and damp, with rising water, sucking mud and clouds of biting insects.
Taiga in each season
TaigaEndless pine and spruce, frozen lakes and long winters. Short summers bring swarms of insects and the risk of wildfire; spring brings the ice breakup.
Tundra in each season
TundraTreeless, wind-scoured land under wide skies: whiteouts, deep cold, midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter, with boggy ground when the thaw comes.
Open sea in each season
Open seaWeather from a ship’s deck: the long swell, fair winds, calms that leave the sails hanging, and great storms that build over days.
