Questions about Skyscribe

What Skyscribe does, what it costs, and how it fits your game.

What is Skyscribe?

Skyscribe is a weather generator for tabletop role-playing games. Tell it where the party is and it gives you each day’s weather as a scene of the land, a description to read to your players, and what the weather means for travel, camp and combat.

Does Skyscribe work with D&D 5e?

Yes. Skyscribe works with any game system, and The Almanac adds rules notes for D&D 5e (2024 rules) on every effect and hazard, based on the System Reference Document 5.2. The weather, scenes and descriptions work just as well for Pathfinder, old-school games or your own system.

Is Skyscribe free?

Yes. The free version has all twelve lands with their villages and cities, every season, a fresh description each day, travel over several days, the journey log, and the effects and hazards that matter most at the table. There are no ads and no subscription.

What does The Almanac add, and what does it cost?

The Almanac is a one-time purchase of $5.99. It adds campaigns, weather like 245 real-world cities, fifteen fantasy climates, the week ahead, your own calendar, more effects, 5e (2024 rules) notes, storytelling controls and unlimited rerolls.

How does Skyscribe generate the weather?

Each land has a climate built from real climate data: temperatures, rain and snow through the seasons. The daily weather runs on top of it, so warm spells and wet spells last for days, fronts bring a change in the wind, and heat waves, cold snaps and blizzards build up and play out. It is never just a random roll on a table.

Which lands and climates can I use?

Forest, farmland, grassland, mountains, desert, rocky coast, sandy coast, jungle, swamp, taiga, tundra and the open sea, each with villages and cities. You can set how high a place is, how far from the sea and how far from the equator. The Almanac adds 245 real-world climates, fifteen fantasy climates such as eternal winter and volcanic ashfall, and a climate editor.

Can I use my campaign setting’s calendar?

The free version has a standard 365-day calendar and a fantasy calendar of ten 30-day months. With The Almanac you can build your setting’s own: months, weekdays, leap days, eras, moons and festivals.

What does the weather mean for the party?

Skyscribe shows how the day affects visibility, travel pace, heat and cold, ranged attacks and a night in camp. When the weather makes a hazard likely, such as a flash flood, avalanche or lightning strike, it shows the odds and lets you roll to see whether it happens.

Can I plan a journey?

Yes. Travel up to thirty days at once and the weather changes as the party moves into new country. Every stay goes into a journey log you can look back on.

Where can I use Skyscribe?

In any web browser at app.skyscriberpg.com, on a computer, tablet or phone. An Android app is coming soon to Google Play.

Does it use Fahrenheit or Celsius?

Either. Choose imperial or metric units in Settings.

Can I keep my campaigns on more than one computer?

Yes. Sign in with Google and your campaigns and The Almanac go with your account, so you can pick up where you left off on another computer.
